Timber, for the established double-storey streets
Wide 50mm timber slats suit the more established homes around Welgemoed and Durbanville's older streets, where the window sizes and interior finishes are more conventional than the frameless glass going up in the newer estates. Quality lacquer handles the belt's normal humidity; keep it out of a steamy en-suite and it will outlast most of the fittings around it.
Aluminium, for the kitchen and bathroom timber can't go in
Slim 25mm aluminium slats do the wet-room work timber can't — steam-safe, easy to wipe down, and available in a colour range that matches a renovated kitchen rather than fighting it. It's also the more budget-friendly of the two, which is why it's a common pick for a converted garage office or a rear extension.
Why tilt beats open-or-closed on a ridge full of view glass
A roller is open or shut by degrees; a venetian steers light by direction. Tilt up for glare-free daylight over a vineyard or fairway view, tilt down for privacy from a neighbour's upper floor on a closely built estate street, close flat for full dark. On a ridge where houses are often stepped up a slope facing each other, that direction control does real, daily work a roller can't.
It's the same logic behind our external venetian blinds — slats standing outside the glass instead of inside it, for the west-facing windows where the sun itself, not just the neighbour's window, is the thing that needs steering.
A tilted slat does what the ridge's own tree line already does to the light — it just lets you choose the angle yourself.
On-site measure, Northern SuburbsThe cost gap between aluminium and real timber
These are installed rates by the square metre. Aluminium slats in 25mm or 50mm come in at roughly R1,000 to R1,500 per square metre. Timber is the step up at R1,600 to R2,600, both for the material and because the extra weight calls for a stronger headrail and better ladder tape if the blind is to keep hanging straight.
Motorised tilt lifts aluminium to R2,500 to R3,600 per square metre and timber to R3,000 to R4,500, the difference being the mass the motor turns. A little window on a landing or in a bathroom is priced at the minimum, whichever slat you pick. Treat none of it as a quotation. The real per-opening figure goes in writing after the measure, once the reveal is known and a slat has been held up against your frames.
